Apple iPad 3 design was the B-plan
Saturday, 19 May 2012 04:10
Raymond Soneira, founder, president and CEO of DisplayMate Technologies, claims Apple's new iPad was the company's plan B because Sharp didn't have its IGZO display technology ready in time. If Apple could have gone through with its plan A, the third-generation iPad would not be thicker and heavier than the older models.
Some analysts are now saying that the gen 3 iPad design that made it out the door earlier this year was Plan B for Apple. Plan A was an iPad that didn't have the additional heft. (While the Apple tablet's height and width remained the same, the thickness of the new iPad swelled slightly to 0.37 inch and the weight edged up to 1.44 pounds.)

That's what Raymond Soneira, the founder, president and CEO of DisplayMate Technologies, is saying, and he knows a lot more than me about the ins and outs of the newest iPad.

"The plan was to use this new technology called IGZO from Sharp -- a lot higher electron mobility that allows them to make the transistors a lot smaller and the circuit elements a lot smaller," he said.

In short, smaller transistors and circuit elements allow more light through and reduce the number of backlights needed, resulting in a thinner display assembly.

Microsoft backs Hybrid Memory Cube technology
Saturday, 19 May 2012 04:10
X-bit Labs has joined the Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium:
The Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium, led by Micron Technology and Samsung Electronics, on Tuesday said that Microsoft Corp. has joined the consortium. The HMCC is a alliance of equipment makers, enablers and integrators cooperating to develop and implement an open interface standard for new memory technology called the hybrid memory cube. It is unknown whether Microsoft will implement HMC into its Xbox Next, or will just support the tech by Windows operating systems.

"HMC technology represents a major step forward in the direction of increasing memory bandwidth and performance, while decreasing the energy and latency needed for moving data between the memory arrays and the processor cores. Harvesting this solution for various future systems could lead to better and/or novel digital experiences," said KD Hallman, general manager of Microsoft strategic software/silicon architectures.

HP undercuts ultrabook pricing with sleekbooks
Saturday, 19 May 2012 04:10
TweakTown released a new line of thin notebooks called "sleekbooks". These systems share some of the properties of ultrabooks, but because they aren't using this name HP doesn't have to abide to all of Intel's rules and can offer a cheaper alternative:
This new line is said to feature both AMD or Intel processors along with a choice of 14- or 15.6-inch screens. Prices are said to start around $599 as opposed to the $749 starting price of other Ultrabooks. The aggressive pricing should help bring in more consumers, and it certainly has my interests piqued.

The machines are maintained at 19.8mm thickness, or less, and weigh under 1.8kg. Battery life is said to last for between seven and nine hours. The release of AMD Trinity, which should occur soon, will further boost the platform. The lack of Ultrabook qualification does have a few detriments, but overall this new machine should gain a lot of support from consumers.
